February 2008

Dear Friend of Music

Welcome . . .

Welcome to the February issue of Musicnotes– we hope you all had a wonderful holiday break and a happy new year. Welcome to all our new subscribers that we have met on our travels and we hope you are still helping to spread the word about the importance of music in our lives.

In this issue we have included information about our new album Take Orff with Recorder as well as information about our incredible overseas trip at the end of 2007, the ANCOS Mosaic conference in January, The Joy of Jammin’  improvisation course and a bird’s eye view of music events for 2008.

What's New?

Take Orff with Recorder
... new resource by Susie & Phil

Great classroom recorder arrangements based on the Orff Schulwerk approach. It includes Susie and Phil’s original and popular pieces and arrangements from the 'Welcome to Music' Series adapted and modified for recorder in various styles including jazz, blues, latin, reggae, calypso etc. There are 15 original pieces beginning with BAG, low E and D and graded in difficulty with opportunities for recorder improvisation. All pieces can combine speech, body percussion, singing, movement, dance and percussion instruments. The repertoire is applicable for 8-12 year olds.

The Teacher’s Kit consists of 2 CDs – recorder/vocal CD, Baktraks CD and a teacher’s manual that includes percussion arrangements, guitar chords, lyrics and individual recorder and percussion scores for classroom use with photocopy permission.

What's been happening?

Phil and I had the pleasure of travelling overseas for 3 months between mid September and December in 2007 mixing work and travel – the best of both worlds. We spent the first 10 days in Canada doing workshops for teachers in Calgary, Edmonton and Red Deer for the Education Department. We also visited schools and presented a workshop for the Red Deer Children’s choir.

Over the next few weeks, we presented to several AOSA (American Orff Schulwerk Association) ‘Chapters’ as they are called in the US, as well as a few school workshops and shows. These workshops were concentrated mainly in California. We made our base with friends in Los Angeles and were fortunate to be able to travel around California in their white ‘92 Cadillac.

Here Comes Funkey Monkey

As part of our overseas trip we spent 10 days in Singapore last December presenting 'Here comes Funkey Monkey' for over 600 enthusiastic parents and children at Jubilee Hall in Raffles hotel. The shows were put on by Pat's Schoolhouse who not only organised and co-ordinated everything, they made all the props and sets and even a custom made monkey suit for Phil! We spent 5 days rehearsing with 70 delightful children aged 4 to 9 who had been selected from island wide auditions and then did 2 fabulous concerts on the weekend to wild and raptous applause. Out of this then comes the Funkey Monkey soft toy and story book and we are looking forward to going back in March to produce a DVD.

Mosaic Orff Schulwerk conference 2008

ANCOS (Australian National Council of Orff Schulwerk) presented the 15th Bienniel Conference in Mt Eliza on the beautiful Mornington Peninsula from the 6th to the 11th Jan.

The special guest presenters were Andrea Ostertag (Austria), Keith Terry (USA), Rodrigo Fernandez (Germany) and our very own Christoph Maubach. All presenters did themselves proud and were a joy to behold. As well as the esteemed guest presenters, there were over 40 international, interstate and local presenters covering a wide range of topics and interest areas.

Evening activities included a bush dance with Gary King and Shenanigans with Christoph, Audrey Fine and Jon Madin to celebrate VOSA’s 30th Anniversary. Jon Madin was awarded a Friend and Mentor of VOSA certificate for his wonderful work with marimbas and instrument inventions.

There was an outdoor movie night with fish and chips, Show Orff concert and finally a Gala dinner with award winning special guest Warren Wills who thrilled us with his breathtaking piano skills and interactive concert.

On Wednesday afternoon/evening many participants enjoyed an excursion including swimming with the dolphins, wine tasting, moonlit sanctuary, millionaire’s walk, golf and visit to a natural springs.

VOSA (the organising body) have received glowing comments, emails and letters about the joy and inspiration that participants experienced during the week. The next ANCOS conference will be in Adelaide in 2010.

What people are saying

about our music shows…..

Dec 07

"Thanks again for putting up a great and inspiring show for all the kids in
Singapore. It was truly fun working with you both"
Patricia Koh, founder and Director of Pat’s Schoolhouse, Singapore

THANK YOU for bringing Funkey Monkey into Singapore....we sure had fun! Sherlayne has been singing the songs from the concert ever since and I'm certain the other children have too. Thank YOU for filling our hearts with the tuneful songs you've created and we certainly look forward to you coming again!
Caren Wan, teacher, Pat’s Schoolhouse, Singapore

I just wanted to thank you so much for all your effort and patience in working with the children over the past week. It has been such a fabulous experience for my daughter Sophie. Her father and I could not have asked for a better invitation into the world of musical theatre than ‘Funkey Monkey’!
Victoria Sinclair, parent, Singapore

about our teacher playshops in USA…..

Oct/Nov 07

We certainly enjoyed your workshop! Thanks so much for all your hard work. The evaluations looked really good! It was very thorough...one comment was: "I felt like I experienced an entire conference in one day of music." Another comment, "I felt that this was great for helping us (adults) understand what it's like to be a kid." This last comment was from our student who was probably at her first Orff workshop. So many teachers are not used to participatory workshops ... they are used to being lectured to!

Sixth grade teacher, "I got so many ideas for my 6th grade class both musically and in general classroom curriculum."

Special Education Teacher, "The physical interaction between the activities and the music is perfect for all levels of my students."

Elementary and College Music Teacher, "Phil and Susie are energetic, positive and full of ideas.Their pedagogy and process are clear and concise."
Lynne E. Halterlein, teacher, Inland Counties Orff Chapter, USA

As programs director for OCCAOSA, I handled our chapter communications and accommodations with Susie and Phil. They were incredibly easy to work with concerning workshop preparations. They presented their workshop to 60 music specialists, classroom teachers, college students and members of the Pacific Symphony Orchestra. Their music and Orff process was very engaging and received many compliments from Orff trained music specialists and others who attended their session. Their presentation was balanced with singing, instrument playing and movement as they demonstrated an exemplary style of Orff teaching and learning processes.

We look forward to having them return to present to our Orff chapter.
Steve Myer, Vice-President and Programs Director
Orange County Chapter of the American Orff Schulwerk Association, USA

Susie and Phil conducted four dynamic sessions that kept college students, elementary classroom teachers, music specialists and high school band directors alike all "wanting more". The feedback from those attending was exceptionally positive. In particular, I have heard from many workshop participants that Susie and Phil's workshop notes and additional materials are extremely user friendly and effective "back in the classroom".
Barbara Janzen, President, Mt. Lassen AOSA, USA

Let me tell you how much my students LOVE your songs. The sixth graders I teach are excited about “I Believe” and “Let’s Sing All Together”. I am so thankful for the CD tracks with accompaniment, too. The younger ones love “Welcome to Music” and “Let’s get moving,” too.
Debra Shrader, Vice Pres, Los Angeles Chapter AOSA, California, USA

about our choral music…..

Jan 08

….. I did hear some very enthusiastic singing from the hall opposite. I went over to hear what they were enjoying so much, and it was your 'One voice, One song', arr. by Mark O'Leary. Edie Copley was leading the session. Everyone entered wholeheartedly into the spirit of your song. It really encapsulated the feeling of the whole Summer School - joy and light-heartedness in the experience of singing and learning together.

Thank you very much, Susie, for supporting ACCET once again.

Best wishes for 2008, and 'Happy Composing'!
Judith McKnight
